As an open enrollment charter school, Aspire Academy is not a part of a larger school district and is freed from many of the bureaucratic hurdles that can impede traditional schools from responding more effectively and efficiently to the needs of students. The school has a sense of urgency about its mission combined with a clear and strong instructional focus.
In order to succeed in realizing an important and challenging mission, Aspire Academy will have a longer school day, a longer school week, and a longer school year. All told, students will spend approximately 50% more time in school, allowing more time for their development of knowledge and skills. All teachers will have cell phones provided by the school so that they can be reached on evenings and weekends for additional help on homework.
All students, teachers, parents, and Board members sign the Commitment to Excellence . This document articulates the roles and responsibilities of each group and specifies the way in which they will help each and every child become a student who is successful at KIPP Aspire Academy, in high school, and in college.
As research repeatedly demonstrates the value of individualization and small group learning, the school will be structured to reach and serve students through both of these methods. All students will create portfolios as a means of recording, assessing, and celebrating their learning and all students will be a part of a daily small group Advisory designed to build culture and community and facilitate individualization. KIPP Aspire Academy will also use its resources to provide important enrichment experiences to every student. KIPP Aspire Academy also has a unique schedule in order to provide the students with the dedication they deserve.
As a KIPP school, Aspire Academy focuses on the five pillars as necessary to fulfill the mission: More Time, a Focus on Results, Choice and Commitment, the Power to Lead, and High Expectations. Each of these is a strategy that has proven to be important in creating a successful school. Integral to these five pillars will be a collaborative culture focused on developing and maintaining superior instruction, which will be the axle upon which the school turns.
